After my experience last year, I knew I had to head back to San Diego this year, even though we are no longer Southern California residents.

The trip was remarkably similar to last year. I took an early morning flight from Austin to LAX on Saturday, and I was picked up by my awesome college buddy G, who had once again secured us "Professional" passes to the show. We drove down to SD, got checked into our hotel, and walked over to the con, hitting the show floor around 1pm. We met up with friends and walked around until the point of exhaustion. Lots of cool stuff on display as usual. I met a few creators, including Ryan Kelly, who has done such stand-out work on Northlanders (Brian Wood's amazing title). I bought two Rucka books from the Oni booth: Whiteout and Queen & Country (wow, how have I not read these before?). Also picked up a couple of books from indie folks to try out. I failed in my attempt to make it to a panel: both Fables and True Blood were way too popular and I was too late arriving.

Once properly exhausted, we grabbed a quick rest/snack back at the hotel then met up with our friends at the same Chinese place where J had booked us last year. In a weird twist, we were at the same table, and once again, our old college friend M (the TV star) was in attendance. After dinner, to my surprise, M got us in to the exact same party at the exact same place. Yep, last year the SciFi party, this year the Syfy party.

We arrived early on before the party had picked up steam. After M twisted arms to get all of us in, we walked the red carpet with him (well, I ran it while he posed for pictures). After M signed some autographs for fans, we rode up to the party on an elevator with Sam Rockwell and his date. I couldn't think of anything to say to Sam ("you're so cool" seemed lame).

In attendance again this year at the party were Nathan Fillion and Joss Whedon, though I left them alone this time. I did get to meet and chat with some other interesting folks. Adrianne Palicki (who played Tyra on Friday Night Lights) was friendly and charming, and we talked about Austin and some friends we have in common. She was there with her boyfriend, Alan Tudyk. I'm a big fan of his work on Firefly/Serenity, but I never got a chance to chat with him. The place was crawling with TV/movie actors: Jamie Kennedy and Jennifer Love Hewitt were there canoodling in the corner; Michael Emerson ("Ben Linus" on Lost) talked with G for a while -- he's a really nice guy who took it in stride when I informed him, late in the evening, that he was the best-dressed man at the party (he was); I spotted multiple stars of the show True Blood across the pool; H and I spent some time stalking Jon Favreau, on whom I later pulled the obnoxious "Hey, Jon! Great to see you!" as he passed by in order to shake his hand (it worked); and of course there were a number of BSG cast members in attendance, including Grace Park and Edward James Olmos. The few minutes I spent speaking with Mr. Olmos were definitely a highlight, as he explained his concept for the connection between BSG and Blade Runner and talked about what he brought to the character of Adama that wasn't there to begin with. I shook his hand, told him I admired his work, and he was extremely gracious.

I'm sure there's many other tidbits that are now lost to my memory. It was a fun night, and G and I managed to stumble back to our hotel with no problems.

The next morning, I hit the con floor again and picked up a few more graphic novels, including a couple by Jeffrey Brown, who I had not read before and of whom I am now a big fan. Then it was off to the airport to catch my flight home, which was terrifying because of a bad storm in DFW. We experienced a very turbulent descent into DFW, and the landing was aborted at what must have been the last possible minute (I could see the runway below us). The silver lining for me is that the plane was re-routed to Austin to wait out the storm, so I got home more or less on time.

There's my Comic-Con report, better late than never. My iPhone pictures are here:

Please do not erode teachers' rights and dignity by voting in favor of HB 975.

Baseless drug testing of teachers sends the wrong message to our children and is a waste of resources.

The idea that "the innocent have nothing to fear" goes against the basis of our justice system and ignores the Bill of Rights. It's a mistake to send that message to the children of Texas.

This legislation would do nothing to make students safer. We should be teaching them respect for the Constitution, not tearing it apart before their eyes.

Late on Saturday night, despite knowing better, I let Software Update try to update me to OS X 10.5.5 on my Mac Pro at home. The next morning I discovered it hung trying to run the installation scripts. After that, booting up was completely out of the question -- the system was totally fubar. Boo Software Update!

I struggled with it for a while, and finally got it to boot from the install DVD by holding down Option during startup then selecting the DVD ROM drive. Unfortunately, there's no way to get verbose output when booting from a DVD, and so I kept resetting thinking it wasn't going to work, and wasting time trying other things. Oh, and to load the DVD I had to remind myself of the "hold mouse button during boot" trick to get the drive tray to open. Finally, I gave up and left it alone trying to boot from DVD, and ta da! It worked.

From there -- smooth sailing. Restoring my system drive from the Time Machine backup worked like a charm, and I was back up and running on 10.5.4 with no data loss. Yay Time Machine!

Yes, I'd been to the NY Comic-Con in 2006 and 2007 and had a great time, but of course the NY con lives in the shadow of the legendary San Diego Comic-Con. Now that I'm in LA, I finally got to see what it is all about.

My friend G and I planned our weekend trip to the event back in April, booking a most excellent hotel on hotwire. G works in an industry that allows him to get free professional passes, which he did on our behalf. (Already feeling pretty cool.)

So on Saturday, the third day of the con, we woke up early and drove down to San Diego, arriving and checking into our hotel before 10am. We went right over to the con and walked the trade show floor for awhile. Impressive. The big-money booths are fun to look at, but both of us more enjoyed seeing and speaking with the small artists, creators, and publishers that set up in the shadow of the giants.

Being an enormous Joss Whedon fan, I insisted we check out the panel for his new Fox show, Dollhouse. We got to the ballroom early to stake out a seat, so we heard the end of Dean Koontz's Q&A, which was very interesting even though we're not readers of his work. The Dollhouse panel started with a trailer, then Eliza Dushku, Tahmoh Penikett, and Joss Whedon came out and took questions from the audience. Joss said some interesting things about the genesis of the show, which was inspired by discussions with Eliza about her life. There was much joking and innuendo (Joss's man-crush/bro-mance with Tahmoh, eyebrow-raising questions to BSG star Tahmoh about Eliza's spine lighting up, etc.), and they fielded some funny and provocative questions. One fan asked if Joss was worried about the fact that people are already setting up "save the show" sites before the pilot airs. It's true, Whedon fans don't have a lot of love for Fox.

After the panel, we hit the floor again until we were exhausted. In addition to all the freebies, I bought an autographed copy of The Lost Books of Eve from Josh Howard, and some excellent DMZ postcards from Brian Wood, which he was also good enough to autograph. I also picked up a fantastic red Scott Pilgrim t-shirt, a Scott pilgrim full-color special issue autographed by one of the guest artists, and a copy of Multiple Warheads, which I still haven't read. I had it in mind that I was looking for an Alex Maleev print (though in retrospect I think I should have been looking for Michael Gaydos artwork), but didn't see anything on Saturday.

When we hit the wall, we went up to the Oni Press panel. It was mostly announcements of upcoming releases. I of course was most excited about the announcement of the February release of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Universe. (Check out Scott Pilgrim here -- it's hilarious.) To be completely honest, though, the panel mostly just provided a much needed nap opportunity.

After the panel, we caught up with some friends and made dinner plans, then went back to the hotel for a nap. We then caught a pedi-cab downtown to dinner at a Chinese place. We managed to free-load on our friend's business dinner, which was nifty.

Our college buddy M, who is a TV star, joined us for dinner, and it was neat to catch up with him. It was also neat that he then got us into the EW/Sci-Fi Channel party at a nearby hotel. It was like Geek Entourage.

I was already skimming along nicely from my two martinis, and shortly after arriving and realizing there was an open bar, I added a tequila shot and a beer to the mix ("oh no" is right). At that point, I started seeing celebrated personages that I admire. The first was Nathan Fillion. I walked over to him, he introduced himself to me, we bantered about his performance as Captain Hammer in Dr. Horrible. He was very nice and hilariously ebullient. Later in the evening, I happened into another conversation with him that had strayed into the topic of arm wrestling. The man has many opinions on arm wrestling. If you ever see a YouTube video of Nathan instructing you on how to arm wrestle, you have me to thank for planting the idea.

Later, I got to meet John Cho of Harold and Kumar fame, who was nice and also a funny guy. Had a great conversation with Hayden Schlossberg, co-writer of H&K, on some of the underlying themes they wrote into the sequel, and how they're approaching #3.

Finally, after much prodding from my compatriots, I introduced myself to Joss Whedon. I'm pretty sure I mumbled some fanboy platitudes about Fray, he was gracious, and I politely moved away. It was awesome. Fanboy meets Joss, a great capper to the day.

The next morning I managed to get another hour on the trade show floor (hangover and all), picking up some more freebies and buying an autographed Maleev sketchbook (score!). Even by 11am, the Sunday trade show floor was getting ridiculously crowded -- I think worse than Saturday.

That's my only-slightly-abridged Comic-Con report. Hope you enjoyed it. Here are my pictures:
