unbelievable

This just in from Boing Boing. Like lynx users don't have it bad enough already!

A Londonder made a tsnuami-relief donation using lynx -- a text-based browser used by the blind, Unix-users and others -- on Sun's Solaris operating system. The site-operator decided that this "unusual" event in the system log indicated a hack-attempt, and the police broke down the donor's door and arrested him.

work computer names

I finally managed to get my linux desktop renamed "firefly". So now my firefly/serenity naming scheme is in full effect!

I'll have to start using Firefly names as code names for projects here... :)

california dreamin'

Well, here I am in California doing a week in the Mountain View office. It's been kind of a rocky trip so far but hopefully it will settle.

Got to have dinner in the Google Cafe last night with Matt G. Was good to catch up with him.

Finally went over to Gallery and got it up and running on fivewells. No link yet -- I want to get all my photos uploaded first. Stay tuned.

Movie tidbit: the web site for MirrorMask is up -- this is a Dave McKean collaboration with Neil Gaiman (of comics fame). I am fascinated by this film, and the early reviews out of Sundance look good.

shared storage server for home

The Maxtor Shared Storage seems like a good idea, but does it really not work with Macs? That kind of sucks. Otherwise I'd be tempted to use it for our heterogeneous setup at home...

movie roundup

Time for Jack's movie roundup. I believe the last one I commented on was Closer. Some before and some after that...

+ Before Sunset: thumbs up, definitely goes near the top of my all-time best list
+ Garden State: thumbs up, enjoyable but a little bit forgettable
+ Sideways: thumbs up, fantastic movie, just see it
+ Incredibles: thumbs up, funny and original, Holly Hunter rocks
- I Heart Huckabees: thumbs down, really liked parts but overall left me kind of cold
+ House of Flying Daggers: thumbs up, I was riveted
+ Kinsey: thumbs up, a fascinating portrait of a man who changed the way we think about sex in this country; couldn't be more timely
- The Life Aquatic with Steve Ziszou: thumbs down, could have been great if Anderson had let the actors actually PLAY the characters
+ Hotel Rwanda: thumbs up, an important movie with amazing performances
+ Million Dollar Baby: thumbs up, great performances redeem the somewhat sappy story
+ In Good Company: thumbs up, Dennis Quaid and Topher Grace are hilarious in this actually very sincere movie about the ever-changing corporate world
