cool video at ourmedia

I was looking around ourmedia.org, which seems like a cool concept, and came across this very cool video by Sam Bisbee.

back from austin -- here there be theremins

Just got back from a nice little Austin vacation on Saturday. No, I didn't do SXSW. Just enjoyed the weather, relaxed, and visited with friends and family.

However, I did attend 1 SXSW event -- my friend Doug's group Austin Theremonic Orchestra performed on Thursday night at The Hideout and it was awesome. The Austin Chronicle has a nice writeup.

townes van zandt

Someone reminded me this morning that it's Townes Van Zandt's birthday. I pulled up "Our Mother The Mountain" on the iPod on the way into work and fell under its spell as always.

This 1969 album, his second, is truly one of my all-time favorites, ever since I was sixteen and bought the cassette out of the bargain bin at Camelot Music in Brownwood, Texas. Van Zandt has to be one of the best songwriters who ever lived. Every song is completely magical and takes me somewhere different.

According to the All Music Guide, this album contains his "least-recognized but finest collections of songs." I don't know about that, but I know that all of the songs are close to my heart, especially "Tecumseh Valley," which is still one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. One of my biggest musical regrets is that I never got to see Townes perform.

Townes, wherever you are, happy birthday, and thank you.

need a picture of something?

PhotoRogue.com - Request an Original Photograph

This is an interesting idea. I'm signed up a photographer. So far the supply exceeds the demand. Pass it on.

the ONION: Gmail User Pities Hotmail User

The Onion | Gmail User Pities Hotmail User

OLYMPIA, WA—Recent Gmail convert William Ramsak, 23, said Monday that his "heart goes out to" friend Kelly Oldenburg, who still sends e-mail through an MSN Hotmail account. "I feel so bad for you, needing to squeeze into 250 MB of storage space," Ramsak wrote to Oldenburg in an e-mail. "And I hate thinking of you sorting all your old e-mail, while Gmail automatically indexes mine so they are searchable." Ramsak then asked Oldenburg when he was going to "stop being a Microstooge and join Team G."
