tv mini reviews
Okay, I am not afraid to admit when I am wrong. I didn't like the first two episodes of John From Cincinnati, but I kept watching, and now I totally love it. It is bizarre and confusing and thought-provoking and I have done a total 180. I admit my change of heart because they're replaying the last 3 episodes tonight on HBO before airing the season finale (10th episode) on Sunday. Highly recommended. Try to keep an open mind.
I recently found two other new shows in cable land that are very impressive. The first is Mad Men on AMC, about advertising execs in 50s New York. A well-written, well-directed, well-acted show with interesting themes. The "it's the 50s!" winks are a little annoying sometimes but after 3 episodes I'll keep watching.
The other show is Saving Grace, with Holly Hunter, on TNT. Okay, granted, I'd probably watch Holly Hunter eat toast and be satisfied, but she kicks butt in this surprisingly well-written show. Leon Rippy (a Deadwood alum) has a scene-stealing role, too. Yes, this is a show about believing in God, but it's not preachy and not predictable and actually does a good job developing the characters. And did I mention Holly Hunter wears tight jeans and has lots of sex?
That's the word from summer TV land. Now back to your regular programming.
[ Update: It's been pointed out to me that Mad Men is set in ~60, not the 50's ]
